Sheldon Retires from the Consortium

On August 3, 2026, we bid farewell to Susannah Sheldon, Research and Fellowships manager. Sheldon retired after 23 years of service with the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and partner organizations.

During her time at the Consortium, Sheldon managed biennial research projects and fellowship programs, including the Margaret A. Davidson Undergraduate Resilience Research Scholars Program, John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service – Sea Grant Joint Fellowship, and Kathryn D. Sullivan Earth and Marine Science Fellowship. She also led the Consortium’s annual reporting for the State of South Carolina and the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program, as well as strategic planning. Sheldon was a member of the Southeastern Estuarine Research Society, Fort Johnson Marine Science Seminar committee, and Sea Grant Research Coordinators Network.

In 2003, Sheldon began her career at the Consortium as graduate assistant while completing her M.S. in environmental sciences at the College of Charleston. She was selected for the prestigious John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship and served as a fellow for the office of the late-Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii from 2004-2005. Sheldon then worked at the NOAA Coastal Services Center and the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA). During her time at SECOORA, she was instrumental in assisting the organization to achieve 501(c)3 nonprofit status. In 2012, the Consortium welcomed Sheldon back as the Fellowship coordinator and she was later promoted to the position of Research and Fellowships manager.
