Honolulu Zoo earns prestigious AZA accreditation

HONOLULU — The Honolulu Zoo is proud to announce that it has been awarded accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a rare and prestigious distinction granted only to institutions that meet the highest standards in animal care, veterinary medicine, conservation, education, and guest safety.

“I commend the dedicated professionals at the Honolulu Zoo whose incredible work made this outstanding achievement possible,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “AZA accreditation is the gold standard in this field, and this recognition reflects the care, expertise, and commitment our zoo team brings to their work every single day. It is something our entire community can take pride in.”

AZA accreditation is a highly respected benchmark for zoos and aquariums worldwide, with fewer than 10 percent of licensed animal exhibitors earning this distinction. The process includes an extensive, multi-day on-site inspection and a comprehensive review of all aspects of operations, ensuring excellence in both animal welfare and the overall guest experience.

“This accreditation is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our Honolulu Zoo staff,” said Jaqueline Peeler, Assistant Director at the Honolulu Zoo. “Their commitment to providing exceptional care for our animals while delivering meaningful educational experiences to the community continues to set a high standard.”

Behind the scenes, the Honolulu Zoo team spent months preparing for the rigorous evaluation, working collaboratively across departments to ensure every program, habitat, and operational standard met or exceeded AZA’s strict requirements. Their efforts highlight a culture of excellence and a deep commitment to the well-being of the animals in their care.

“Earning AZA accreditation is an outstanding achievement and an incredible point of pride for our entire Honolulu Zoo team,” said Dita Holifield, Director of Enterprise Services. “This recognition speaks to the passion, professionalism, and tireless work of our staff, as well as our commitment to creating a world-class experience for residents and visitors alike.”

The Honolulu Zoo plays a vital role in conservation and education across Hawaiʻi, inspiring residents and visitors to develop a deeper understanding of wildlife and the importance of protecting natural ecosystems. Through its programs and partnerships, the zoo continues to foster mālama for animals and the environment while connecting the community to global conservation efforts.

The City and County of Honolulu remains committed to supporting the zoo’s mission and building on this achievement as it continues to enhance facilities, expand educational opportunities, and strengthen its role as a trusted steward of wildlife.
